Your birth chart — also called a natal chart — is a snapshot of exactly where every planet was positioned at the moment you were born, mapped onto the sky as seen from your birthplace. It looks intimidating: a circle full of symbols, lines and numbers. But once you understand its handful of core building blocks, reading it becomes far more approachable than it first appears.

Think of your birth chart as having three layers stacked together: which planets are involved, which signs they occupy, and which houses (areas of life) they fall into. A planet in a sign tells you the “flavour” of that planet’s energy; the house tells you which part of your life it shows up in most strongly.

Do not try to interpret the whole chart at once. Start with your Sun, Moon and Rising sign combination — this alone explains most of what people notice about your personality. Then look at where Venus and Mars sit, since they shape your approach to love and ambition. Everything else can wait until you’re comfortable with these five placements.
